Algona Woman Sentenced In South Dakota Fraud Case

July 03, 2025

(Algona)– An Algona woman has been sentenced on two felony counts in South Dakota.

Lonna Carroll was accused of stealing nearly one-point-eight-million-dollars in state and federal funds while working as an administrative assistant for the South Dakota Department of Social Services. Authorities found that the 68-year-old submitted over 200 fraudulent funding requests between 2010 and 2023 and would take the cash for herself.

Carroll was sentenced to 13 years in prison on Tuesday.
