Spencer Fire-Rescue Adds Two New Boats To Its Fleet Of Equipment

June 03, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Spencer Fire-Rescue has some new equipment to assist in water rescues. Chief Jesse Coulson told the city council Monday they now have two rigid flat bottom boats…

“We’ve had them out for over a week now practicing and training on them. They’re in service and can be deployed now as needed. These boats are much different than what we had. We had like a rubbery raft. These are two flat bottom boats. One is small and nimble and can be moved around by truck, two personnel, it’s only 98 pounds. The other one can travel up to 20 miles per hour in six inches of water and it has a jet propelled motor. So these are boats that were desperately needed to help fill a gap in any kind of a rescue or response we may have. They just fit our community much better.”

Coulson says the acquisition of the new boats was made possible through fundraising.

A report from a consultant that evaluated the city’s response to last year’s flood included a recommendation for the department to have the flat bottom boats.
