Buena Vista County Supervisors Discuss Road Agreement For Wind Turbine Project

May 27, 2025 Steve Schwaller

The Buena Vista County Board of Supervisors this (Tues) morning tabled a road use agreement pertaining to a future wind turbine project.

Allete Clean Energy out of Minnesota plans to replace 259 existing wind turbines, and add 44 new energy-efficient turbines in the county. Allete representative Josh Yernatich says the turbines are expected to be built and operational in 2027…

Yernatich said turbine weight loads will vary. He didn’t have specifics since a turbine manufacturer hasn’t been chosen yet. Yernatich said Allete will pay the cost if any road needs to be built up to get their equipment where it needs to go.

Yernatich said BV County Attorney Paul Allen has reviewed the road use agreement and approved it, but the supervisors agreed to table it for one week so they can get more information from County Engineer Bret Wilkinson.

ALLETE purchased two wind farms near Alta in 2014. The two wind farms have been operating since 1999. The company says refurbishing its Buena Vista County wind farms will improve turbine performance and reliability, and support the renewal of power sales agreements. The electricity generated at the two wind farms is sold to MidAmerican Energy, Alliant Energy, and a regional electricity transmission organization known as MISO.
