(Spirit Lake)– A collision Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 9 and 15th Street on the west edge of Spirit Lake sent two people to the hospital.

An accident report by the Spirit Lake Police Department says 87-year-old Richard Staver of Spirit Lake was driving a 2020 Chevy Equinox westbound on 15th Street and had stopped at the Highway 9 intersection when he pulled into the path of the cement truck driven by 66-year-old Dennis Pike of Luverne, Minnesota.

Staver and a passenger in his vehicle, 82-year-old Barbara Staver of Spirit Lake, were taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare. No injuries were reported to Pike.

Richard Staver was cited for failure to yield.

Damage to the Equinox driven by Staver was estimated at $30,000; damage to the cement truck was estimated at $15,000. The Spirit Lake Fire Department had to remove a door from the SUV to get to one of the occupants of that vehicle.

The collision took place a little before 1:00 pm.
