Birding On The Green Coming Back For Another Season

May 01, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Okoboji)– The Dickinson County Nature Center will hold their first Birding on the Green event on May 5th at Brooks Golf Course. Amy Heibult, Dickinson County Conservation Board Community Coordinator, says its open to everyone…

“This is a free program so anyone and everyone who has all levels of birding knowledge or they’re just learning about birds its a great time to come and learn and just kind of hang out with a bunch of like minded individuals.”

People who are interested can meet in the parking lot at Brooks Golf Course at 7 am and Heibult explains what will happen…

“There will be nature center staff as well as Don Vrchota he’s the President of the Jackson County bird watchers in MN. So they co-lead the group and we’ll pair up into golf carts and drive around the course for a couple of hours just seeing what we can see out on the course. We’ll make a list of the species of birds that we see.”

Heibult says you can expect to see a lot of different species…

“It’s a really cool course that has woodland, wetland, prairie all kind of intermixed there so we see a wide variety of bird species. Last year they actually saw about 67 species total which is pretty good and right now is a great time of year because of migratory species in the area. We have a lot of Warblers and just things that we haven’t really seen for awhile during the winter.”

Birding on the Green will happen at Brooks Golf Course the first Monday of every month starting on May 5th and ending on September 8th.
