Gillnetting For Walleyes & Muskies On Iowa Great Lakes To Start Wednesday Night

April 08, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Orleans)– Gillnetting operations for walleyes and muskies on the Iowa Great Lakes will be getting underway tomorrow (Wednesday) night.

Kim Hawkins, a fisheries biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says they’ll be netting about 550 to 600 female walleye, with the operations expected to take three to four nights. She says broodstock will be available for viewing in the hatchery starting Thursday and will continue until they reach their quota. She explains how that number is determined…

The Spirit Lake Fish Hatchery will again be open extended hours during the operations: Thursday and Friday 8:00 am until 8:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am until 6:00 pm. Hours will return to normal after that.
