Officials Warn Of An Extremely High Fire Danger; Red Flag Warning Issued

March 28, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Officials are encouraging everyone NOT to do any open burning today (Fri.). A Red Flag Warning will be in effect for a good deal of the region, including the Iowa Great Lakes, from Noon until 8:00 pm this (Fri.) evening. Forecasters say low humidity, strong wind and dry vegetation will combine to create a very high fire danger.

Some relief is on the way, however. A strong spring storm system will bring what could be significant amounts of precipitation with it this weekend. Rain chances will be on the increase tonight (Fri.) and through the day Saturday. Some of that will likely change to snow Saturday night into Sunday, but no accumulations are expected.

And while we’ll be well into the 80’s for highs today (Fri.), temperatures Saturday will only be in the 40’s, with highs Saturday not getting out of the 30’s.

Additional chances for rain, and yes, snow, are in the forecast next week.
