Spencer Firefighters Respond To Dumpster Fire

March 24, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– There was a close call Sunday when a dumpster caught fire near a building in Spencer. Crews with Spencer/Fire Rescue were called to 10 11th Street Southeast, just south of the South T, a little before 11:00 am.

A press release says some workers were attempting to put out the fire with a garden hose. Firefighters used about 800 gallons of water and foam to put it out completely. The dumpster was then moved away from the building for further overhaul and suppression.

Spencer Fire Chief Jesse Coulson says it’s an important reminder that dumpsters and other waste receptacles must be kept at least five feet away from combustible walls, openings or combustible roof eave lines. He says that’s spelled out in Fire Code.

Spencer firefighters were on the scene a little more than an hour.
