DNR Announces Additional Prescribed Burns

March 10, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Ruthven)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has announced plans for additional prescribed burns this spring. They include wildlife management areas in Clay and Palo Alto counties and the DNR’s Prairie Lakes-Ruthven Unit. More specifically, the burns will be conducted at Dan Green Slough, Dewey’s Pasture, Elk Lake, Fen Valley, Hawk Valley, Little Sioux, Ocheyedan and Tom Tuttle Marsh in Clay county and Bluewind Marsh, Fallow Marsh, Perkins Marsh, and Silver Lake in Palo Alto county.

DNR officials say prescribed burns improve wildlife habitat and control invasive plant species. They say they also help restore and maintain native plant communities. The burns are typically conducted on a 4-5 year rotation.
