Grass Fire Near Diamond Lake Complex Burns Nearly 121 Acres

March 03, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Firefighters from multiple departments battled a large grass fire in the area of 120th Street and Highway 86 earlier today (Mon.). Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly says they were called to that location around 10:23 this (Mon.) morning. He says the nature of the fire posed some challenges…

“They had some creeks down in there that we had to get around, there was a bunch of trees. We were trying to keep it out of a bunch of trees that had fallen down. We didn’t want them catching on fire. If it sparked across the road we would have been in trouble because that’s the Diamond Lake over there and it’s nothing but tall grass over there. We would have been working through the night probably if it got over there.”

Daly says nearly 121 acres burned in the fire. Fire departments from Lake Park, Milford, Arnolds Park-Okoboji, Estherville, and Lakefield also responded to the scene along with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Emmet County Emergency Management and a drone, the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol.

Daly says they were able to keep the fire from spreading to some nearby structures including at least one house. He says it originated from a burn pile. Firefighters were on the scene nearly four hours. No injuries were reported.
