(Spirit Lake)– The annual “Shake the Lakes” Show Choir Contest is this weekend in Spirit Lake. The event is considered the midwest’s best jazz and show choir competition. “Shake the Lakes” will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts at Spirit Lake High School. Luke Miller, the vocal music instructor at Spirit Lake, explains what to expect…
“On Friday we have 28 different jazz choirs coming in to perform and compete against each other, and that will go from 9:00 in the morning until about 8:30 at night. All day Friday it will be jazz choir performances. And then on Saturday we have our show choir competitions which is middle school in the morning and high schools through the afternoon. There are 24 different show choirs that are competing on Saturday. And then in the evening the top six show choirs will then compete in the finals to decide who the grand champion of Shake the Lakes is.”

“The great thing about this is it also brings those parents, when they’re not watching their kids, a lot of times they like to sneak out and go to our local eating establishments and shopping establishments, so it’s a great way to bring people into the area in the off season here in Okoboji.”
Tickets are $15.00 for adults, $5.00 for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and kids five and under get in free. Tickets can be purchased at the door with cash or a credit card. The event starts at 9:00 am on Friday morning.
