Spirit Lake Being Considered As A Pass Through City For RAGBRAI

February 13, 2025 Steve Schwaller

***This is a correction to a previous version of the story***

(Spirit Lake)– Even though overnight towns have been announced for this year’s RAGBRAI event, other details, including the exact route and pass through towns, have yet to be determined. KUOO news has learned the city of Spirit Lake is being considered by RAGBRAI officials as a pass through city on Monday, July 21st, after riders depart Milford, destined for Estherville which is the second overnight stop. Spirit Lake City Attorney/Administrator Gregg Owens confirmed to KUOO news RAGBRAI officials have had some preliminary discussions with city officials…

“We have had two just sort of short visits, so the answer is yes. There is some thought that maybe they might come to Spirit Lake on (that) Monday morning. With a lot of construction projects and activities in the area that weekend, the Dickinson County Fair going on and some other things, and other aspects of that possibility that need to be explored, they haven’t made any final decision about whether that’s going to work and I know a lot of other people will be weighing in on how that could work or might work. So the answer is yes, we’ve had some discussions, I think there’s an interest in that, whether that goes further or how it far it goes just kind of depends on how a lot of these other things that are going on at the same time fit in with that possibility.”

Owens says none of the talks so far have mentioned a possible route riders would take through Spirit Lake…

“I would say I’ve seen some possibilities but then with the possibilities then you see well, there’s construction on Hill Avenue; if you look at Orleans there’s going to be construction in Orleans. If you look at certain areas of town we have some competing events that are going on. So I think right now what they’re trying to figure out is if they came this way what route would work? And those kinds of ideas they’re researching right now.”

We had earlier reported there had been discussions between RAGBRAI and the Dickinson County Fair Board. Fair Board members tell us that is incorrect and that as of now those discussions have NOT taken place. We apologize for the error.
