The Director Of The Dickinson County Museum Announces She’s Stepping Down

February 06, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Director of the Dickinson County Museum in Spirit Lake is stepping down. Mary Dreier has announced her resignation after about four years at the helm…

“I’m turning 70 next month. The days ahead are shorter than the days behind. I’ve got grandkids to be around, I’ve got my paddleboard and my kayak that are just dying to have me use them because I haven’t had much time in the last four years.”

Dreier says there’s a lot she’s going to miss about the job, adding she plans to continue to serve as a volunteer…

“I’ve always been a Dickinson county history geek. Always. My family grew up here and actually I was asked to take the job back four years ago. I thought about it and thought about it and I thought well yeah. It’s the best decision I ever made. I have loved every minute of being here.”

A search for Dreier’s successor is currently underway and will continue through the end of March. Dreier says she’ll remain in the position in the meantime but her goal is to be done by this coming Memorial Day. The announcement comes as a major renovation is getting underway in the depot portion of the museum…

“We have actually started our prep work for that. We have an under construction now on the depot, so we are moving ahead with this with an anticipated opening date of Labor Day of this year.”

That project will include a number of interactive exhibits.

Dreier adds she’s very proud of what she accomplished as Director of the Dickinson County Museum and is very excited for its future.
