Additional Details Released Into Storm Lake Stand-Off

January 27, 2025 Steve Schwaller

(Storm Lake)– The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has released additional details into an incident in Storm Lake in which a man barricaded himself in a residence and fired several rounds at law enforcement.

They say it started around 8:00 am Sunday when deputies pulled over a pickup for speeding just outside of Storm Lake. During the stop, the driver, identified as 45-year-old Daniel Joseph James Palenik, was uncooperative, made threats toward law enforcement, then took at a high rate of speed. Palenik was located by law enforcement a short time later at his residence in Storm Lake, and barricaded himself inside. At about 10:00 am authorities evacuated a neighborhood in the 300 block of Oneida Street and set up a perimeter around the home. Authorities say that about 4:00 pm Palenik fired several rounds at law enforcement. Numerous law enforcement agencies from throughout west central and northwest Iowa then arrived. Throughout the afternoon and evening Sunday, Palenik fired dozens of rounds at officers. Authorities say shortly before 3:00 am this (Mon.) morning, Palenik again fired at law enforcement, striking some occupied vehicles and equipment. Officers returned fire, striking Palenik. He died at the scene.

Authorities say the officers involved in the shooting were put on administrative leave consistent with departmental policy. They say the incident remains under investigation.
