(Spencer)– Even though we’re in the dead of winter, the lack of snow cover this season continues to put the region under a high danger for grass fires.
The Spencer Fire Department was called around 1:30 pm Sunday after getting a report of a grass fire in a vacant lot at 711 4th Avenue Southeast, which was spreading toward a residence. The fire was out when crews arrived, however they found a smoldering fire in a fire pit, which was then extinguished.
It was determined that some paper blew out of the fire pit, igniting the grass. Firefighters were on the scene about 10 minutes.
