“Sweet Dreams For Spencer” Flood Relief Program Unveiled

July 16, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Spencer Kiwanis After Five, along with the Spencer Community Theatre Playhouse Basil & Mildred Deegan Children’s Theatre and the Clay County Community Foundation are announcing a new flood disaster relief program. TJ Johnson, one of the organizers, says the “Sweet Dreams For Spencer” project will provide replacement household items to kids ages infant to 17 that were destroyed in the recent flooding in that community…

“Specifically we’re looking at replacing a twin size or full size mattress that will come with a headboard and a bed frame that it will go on, and then it will also have sheets, pillows, and a comforter, a book for bedtime stories. Hashtag Spencer Reads is a partner with us and Spencer Public Library are helping identify some titles for various age groups and helping us get access to those books, and then we’ll also have a small stuffed Spencer tiger that will have a message of hope that the tiger wears on a little t-shirt there.”

Johnson says they’re now accepting applications from those who are in need…

“Folks can apply by going to the SCT Playhouse Box Office or they can stop at the Spencer Public Library. We’ve also got some applications here at my office, Speed Printers, and the Foundation Church, their new distribution center that they just relocated, there are applications available there, as well. And if for whatever reason people aren’t able to get to them you can always email me at sweetdreamsspencer@gmail.com or they can call me at 612-548-1603 and I can help them get an application. It’s a two-part NCR, one for our tracking and one that they can keep as kind of a receipt that they fill out. A very simple form, it takes just a couple minutes and a really easy process.”

He says they’re also looking for help with building the headboards…

“We’ve got a simple build kit and Schoeneman’s is providing us materials. It should be a fairly simple get it to your shop, put it together and a wood finish that we’ve got. We’ll provide all of those kits and we’re hoping that we can get some volunteer builders that would be willing to help us in the build piece of this program.”

Johnson says financial contributions would also be greatly appreciated.
