Iowa D.O.T Director Gives Update On That Agency’s Flood Recovery Operations

July 12, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– An agency that’s played a crucial role in the clean-up in Spencer is the Iowa Department of Transportation. Director Scott Marlor says D.O.T crews from throughout the state have been helping out with hauling debris from that city…

“In total we hauled off 2,880 loads, including 1,479 large appliances. These record floods also had a significant impact on roads and bridges. We logged 73 closures of primary system roads and bridges from the flooding and since that time, we’ve had two teams of bridge inspectors: one out of Atlantic, one out of Cherokee, as well as our district staff, working continuously to inspect these bridges, structures, pavements, shoulders, and other infrastructure. We’ve completed 29 bridge inspections and only two bridges remain closed at this time. U.S. 18 bridge west of Spencer remains closed due to severe damage. At this particular bridge the guardrail, the guardrail posts I should say, were dangling in mid air because the embankment literally washed away. We also have the bridge over the Big Sioux River at Akron still closed.”

Marlor added that as part of their flood response, the D.O.T was able to integrate county road closures into its 511 system.
