DNR Advising Extreme Caution For Anyone Planning To Do Any Boating

July 01, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Undated)– This Independence Day holiday will be especially dangerous for boating on Iowa lakes and rivers, due to heavy rain and flooding. Susan Stocker of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says anyone planning on doing any boating will need to be on the lookout for a lot of debris…

“Everything that is upstream and was dry for the last four years is now going to be afloat.”

Stocker says what you see floating on the surface could be deceptive…

“You may see a small piece of debris above water and not realize that that is attached to the 30 foot tree that has washed downstream.”

And a reminder that a 5 mph speed limit is in place for all Dickinson county lakes until further notice due to the very high water levels. Officials add that docking watercraft on the Iowa Great Lakes will also be difficult due to the large number of public docks that have been heavily damaged, under water, or taken out altogether.
