Lakeside Speaker Series to feature talk by Dr. Katherine McCarville July 2

June 28, 2024 Becky Thoreson

(Okoboji)-The Lakeside Lab Speaker Series will feature a talk on Iowa geology Tuesday night. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The Friends of Lakeside Lab Speaker Series will continue Tuesday evening with a talk by Dr. Katherine McCarville, Geoscientist in Residence at Lakeside Lab who will be speaking about Iowa Rocks. “I think sometimes people think you have to be an expert to be able to identify your finds, but in fact, you can narrow things down quite a lot all by yourself once you learn a few key principles and strategies to deploy. So, that’s the goal of this, it’s not just a talk, it’s kind of a workshop, to get you working on understanding Iowa geology, what you’re likely to find and then, being able to, on your own, narrow it down what the identity of whatever your finding might be.”
She adds that participants are encouraged to bring specimens to the talk. “So, if they have a treasure or a find and they want to know more about that, this might be an opportunity. I always encourage people to pack things very carefully. I hate to see things get broken or damaged when you bring them. So, if you have something that’s super fragile, just do photographs and use a light background, take several photos from different angles.”
The talk will start at 7 o’clock Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall on the Lakeside Campus. The talk is free and open to the public.
