DNR Participates In Numerous Water Rescues During Flood Event

June 27, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Undated)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is being credited for participating in more than 200 water rescues during the flooding in northwest Iowa. Greg Harson is a DNR law enforcement supervisor in northwest Iowa…

“The DNR officers, they were probably in the 250 range with between Rock Valley, Hawarden and Spencer and Correctionville.”

Harson says it was extremely challenging for rescue crews…

“The current was just very strong. We had to be very careful and use boats with enough horsepower to be able to overcome that current.”

He says the situation in Rock Valley was especially troublesome…

“In Rock Valley we took people off the roofs. The water was probably 8 to 12 feet up so any of those ranch style houses, the water was up to the roofs on those houses.”

Harson says pictures of what was going on don’t really do it justice.
