Estherville City Council Discusses Water Service & Possible Future Growth

May 21, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– A discussion on water service and potential future growth was a topic of discussion at Monday’s Estherville City Council meeting. A request by a homeowner near the golf course on the city’s west side to connect to rural water is what sparked the discussion. The golf course club house and another home in that area are already connected to rural water. City Administrator Penny Clayton said that area could see further growth in the future adding it’s something the council should think about while considering the request…

“If we were to continue to develop that way and extend our city limits that direction, we would want to serve city water out there. So that’s the downside of this is where do we anticipate most of our growth and do we want to have a random piece of rural water serving an area that could potentially be some day in city limits.”

Councilman Gary Myers said he’s concerned a precedence could be set…

“I’m worried I could see somebody coming in and saying well, they’re on rural water, why can’t I be on rural water?”

Following some further discussion a motion to approve the request for the rural water connection was approved. Myers abstained from the vote.
