Friends of Lakeside Lab Speaker Series to Kick off May 21

May 20, 2024 Becky Thoreson

(Wahpeton)– The Lakeside Lab Speaker Series kicks off for another season Tuesday evening. KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

The Friends of Lakeside Lab Speaker Series will get underway for the season on Tuesday evening on the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Campus.

Environmental Scientist Lyndy Holdt says she’ll be speaking about algae blooms. “I’ll be talking about a project that’s been going on for about three summers now, hopefully we’re going to be wrapping up the data analysis this summer. This came out of a project called the Iowa Healthy Lakes Initiative out of the University of Iowa that we’ve been working in partnership with Iowa Lakeside Lab here the last couple of summers. So this is actually my masters work that I completed my dissertation on.”

She adds that she hopes to help create awareness about harmful blooms. ““Hopefully one of the things that we’re going to do this summer is kind of raise awareness on the difference between non-harmful algae and harmful algae, because we don’t want to scare people away from swimming or the beaches and we want to give people the best information to make an informed decision about what’s right for them and their children and their dogs.”

Lyndy Holdt will speak Tuesday evening at Mahan Hall at Lakeside Lab starting at 7:00 pm. The talk is free and open to the public.
