(Estherville)– There was a close call Saturday when a kayak flipped over on the West Fork of the Des Moines River in Estherville.
According to a post on their Facebook page, the Estherville Fire Department says a child was being sucked under a log jam and that the child’s life jacket had become tangled in it. The post goes on to say that an adult female was able to hold on to the child and kept her face above water until firefighters arrived. They were then able to cut the lifejacket free.
The Estherville Fire Department brought six people to safety with their rescue boat. Two individuals were able to bring themselves to safety.
All were checked over on the scene by an ambulance crew. Two were taken to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville. There was no information on their condition.
A number of agencies assisted on the scene, including the Iowa DNR, Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Estherville Police Department and the Iowa State Patrol.
