(Spirit Lake)– Absentee voting for the June 4th primary election gets underway this Wednesday, May 15th. Jordan Moyer oversees elections at the Dickinson County Auditor’s Office. She tells KUOO news there’s been a change in the location for in-person absentee voting for not only the primary election, but also for the general election coming up in November. She says it will be taking place in the Community Room at the courthouse, which is where the Board of Supervisors meet, instead of the election room at the Auditor’s Office…
“We know that it’s going to be a busy year. The primary won’t be as busy but with it being a Presidential year we know that we need more room and our election room just isn’t big enough. And so we’re doing it for the primary to kind of see what it’s going to look like for when we do have a lot more people in November.”
And if you’re going to be voting absentee by mail, Moyer says you need to be getting those requests in NOW…
“Monday, May 20th is the last day that we can mail out a ballot. We need to have that absentee ballot request form in our office by Monday, May 20th in order for you to get it mailed out to you if you choose to do that.”
Moyer adds you also need to declare a party affiliation in order to vote in the primary…
“And this year we do have three of that parties that are on the ballot. We have Democrat, Republican and Libertarian on that ballot and you do have to choose one of those in order to vote in this election.”
She says you will be able to declare a party or switch affiliations at the polling location…
“If you have not changed you can actually go on election day or if you choose to absentee vote you can change that day, and then you just can’t change back, or you can’t change your party again, until after the election is closed, so we ask that you wait until the week after.”
Polls on primary election day, June 4th, will be open from 7:00 am until 8:00 pm. We’ll have more on that as the date approaches.
