Iowa Legislature Passes Bill Making It Easier For Teachers To Carry Firearms On School Property

April 16, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– Teachers and school staff can get a permit to carry a gun on school property, under a bill passed by the Iowa Legislature. Democratic State Representative Beth Wessel-Kroeschell of Ames is critical of the measure…

“It does nothing to protect children who might be the victim of cross fires, of accidents of a gun not being properly stored.”

Republican State Representative Phil Thompson of Boone says the necessary precautions are included in the bill…

“Time and math do not lie. The first 30 seconds in these scenarios are extremely critical. This bill does set a high standard for districts and staff.”

Educators would need to pass several training courses and pass a background check to get the permit.

Ready to be signed into law, the bill also requires large school districts to post a security officer at every high school.
