Storm Lake Man Accused Of Trying To Start A Fire In A Laundromat

March 15, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Storm Lake)– A Storm Lake man has been arrested after allegedly trying to start a fire in a laundromat. Storm Lake police and firefighters were called around 11:00 pm Wednesday after getting a report of a trash can on fire outside of the business. Bystanders extinguished the fire by the time crews arrived, with minor damage reported.

Police viewed surveillance video in which a man could be seen using a lighter to start a trash can on fire inside the laundromat. The fire eventually spread. Several people used water to put it out and moved the trash can outside. The suspect had fled by the time police arrived. He was identified through the video as 46-year-old Dany Duarte of Storm Lake.

Duarte was arrested early Thursday in Storm Lake and was charged with arson in the 1st degree, a class B felony. He was booked into jail on a $25,000 bond.
