(Spencer)– An apartment complex in Spencer had to be evacuated earlier this afternoon after unattended cooking in one of the units filled the building with smoke.
The Spencer Fire Department was called shortly after noon to 1212 Grand Avenue and found light smoke in the building’s atrium. Entry was made to the apartment where the smoke was originating. Firefighters found a pan on the stove, which was turned on. Fire damage was reported to the stove and surrounding area.
A press release from the Spencer Fire Department says no one was in the apartment at the time. Two dogs were removed from the apartment. They weren’t injured. Firefighters then ventilated the building before residents were allowed to return.
Authorities remind everyone cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries and is the second leading cause of home fire deaths.
Firefighters were on the scene nearly an hour.
The Spencer Police Department assisted on the scene and an ambulance and paramedics from Spencer Hospital stood by as a precaution.
