(Sheldon)– A two-vehicle collision a little before 10:00 am Friday on Highway 18 one mile west of Sheldon sent two people to the hospital and one of the drivers to jail.
Authorities say 18-year-old Alex Lopez-Morales of Sioux Center was driving a 2013 Ford Explorer westbound on Highway 18. 78-year-old Helen Golden of Sioux Falls, SD was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry eastbound on Highway 18. The Ford crossed the center line, striking the Toyota, resulting in both vehicles coming to rest in the south ditch.
Golden and a passenger were transported by the Sheldon Ambulance to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. Lopez-Morales and his passengers declined further medical treatment.
The Ford sustained approximately $8,000 in damage. The Toyota sustained approximately $9,500 in damage.
Lopez-Morales was arrested and transported to the Sioux County Jail, where he was charged with operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license, operating a motor vehicle on the wrong side of a two-way highway and operating a motor vehicle without liability insurance.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Sheldon Police Department, Sheldon Fire Department, Sheldon Community Ambulance Team and Sheldon Emergency Management Agency.
