Crop Expert: Rain Came At A Critical Time

July 12, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Lakefield, Mn.)– The rain that fell across the region this (Wed.) morning couldn’t have come at a better time. That word from Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield…

“Reports from anywhere from an inch to, around an inch, you know, four or five tenths in some places, and up to an inch and-a-half in others, so. Perfect timing with the corn, you know, just starting to tassel and is starting pollination and it’s just really going to be a shot-in-the-arm to the growth and development of these crops.”

Nesseth says it’s a critical time for crop development. He says the corn is pollinating and setting ears and soybeans are blooming and starting to set pods. He says there is some concern, though, for corn in some areas due to rootworm issues…

“You know we’ve got some corn that’s starting to lean just a little bit and so we’re vulnerable, I think, to maybe some wind events if they come down in the near future here. It just seems like we’ve had a little higher population of corn rootworms and probably due to the snow cover this past winter we probably just didn’t get that mortality and a lot of the eggs and so I think that’s going to be a concern down the road here but we’ll just have to wait and see.”

Nesseth says as of now there’s been no indication of any aphids in soybeans.
