Precipitation Chances In Coming Week Likely To Have Little Impact On Drought Conditions

November 04, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– Rain in the forecast may miss the part of Iowa that really needs it the most. State Climatologist Justin Glison says northwest Iowa has been in some sort of drought for two years now…

“That corner of the state just consistently misses out on these widespread and higher intensity rainfall events.”

Glison says it’s crucial the region sees some two to three inches of rainfall before the ground freezes…

“This rainfall event that is forecasted over the weekend, if we can squeeze two to three inches out of that across much of the state, it’s looking like more rain in eastern Iowa, but if we can get measurable totals that will really help.”

Glison says some areas of northwest Iowa are nearly 10 inches below normal on rainfall.

Some rain did fall across the region Thursday night, but amounts varied a lot over short distances. 27 one-hundredths of-an-inch of rain fell at the KUOO studios on the west side of Spirit Lake. The north side of Milford, however, reported an inch.

Forecasters say we will be in a more active pattern with some additional chances for precipitation in the upcoming week, but amounts are expected to be light.
