Wahpeton City Council Tables Land Purchase

January 11, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Wahpeton)– The Wahpeton City Council Monday evening tabled action on a resolution to purchase land from the Presbyterian Camp for construction of a new water treatment plant. It would replace the present facility which is becoming obsolete. The council tabled the purchase agreement on a recommendation from Public Works official Logan Davids, who suggested they meet with the engineer regarding the results of a soil analysis on the site…

“I think, you know, we should just have a special meeting almost to have ISG come up, you know, and explain these things. This is, you know, I’m not trying to throw anyone under the bus, but we don’t understand what this is all saying. They would know more and then they would actually understand, so.”

The council voted unanimously to hold a special meeting in the near future to learn more about the findings.

On another matter, there was also discussion over traffic enforcement in the city. The council recently approved the purchase of some speed bumps but learned Monday evening of some potential liability concerns. They directed City Attorney Don Hemphill to research that further. Meanwhile council member Holly Mead said the city needs to continue looking at other ways to address the concerns, saying they owe it to their constituents…

“Because we made a commitment to these citizens and we’ve talked it about so much, we absolutely, I mean I’m adamant that we do something, and proactively, not reactively.”

Councilman Harold Prior added he would like to see stepped up efforts by law enforcement…

“They’ve got more places now than they’ve ever had to sit where people can’t see them and start writing a bunch of tickets. The more tickets you write, pretty quick you’re going to pretty well take care of that problem.”

Wahpeton contracts with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement.

City staff was directed to get prices on some additional signage and will report back to the council with that information.
