January 15, 2021

(Emmetsburg)– Trial for an Emmetsburg man accused of using a pair of bolt cutters to kill another man has been pushed back to June 8th, 2021.

Allan Schwidder was charged with 1st degree murder in the death of 27-year-old Rollin Bontrager of Washington, Iowa. His body was found July 22nd of last year in Virgin Lake near Ruthven.

An autopsy indicated Bontrager sustained head injuries consistent with being struck with a bolt cutter tool.

According to court documents, witnesses reported seeing Schwidder at the lake on July 19th and that surveillance video showed Bontrager was still alive shortly before 2:30 pm that same day, and that he had last been seen with Schwidder. The documents state that Schwidder allegedly admitted to several people that night that he had killed Bontrager at Virgin Lake.

As part of the investigation, authorities executed search warrants on two residences in Emmetsburg along with several vehicles.
