Dickinson Co. Supervisors Unanimously Adopt Mask Proclamation

December 01, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors this (Tues.) morning voted unanimously to adopt a proclamation highly urging residents in the county to wear face masks whenever in public. Several supervisors, including Chairman Bill Leupold, said they had received comments in opposition to the matter. Leupold added that if he’s going to err, it would be on the side of public health…County Mask Proclamation01

“Like anything about this covid, nobody knows anything. And so there are theoretical studies where masks don’t help. There are some doctors that say masks don’t help. There are some doctors that are strongly for wearing masks. And so what I think it comes down to is we have to figure out here what we think is best for the health of our employees and our citizens.”

Fellow supervisor Tim Fairchild agreed, adding it’s important to point out the difference between a proclamation and a mandate…County Mask Proclamation02

“I think if we pushed a mandate mask usage would go down, just because we’re in a counter intuitive society right now. If I do this, you’re going to do that. A proclamation, I think, would actually be more effective than a mandate for that very reason. The number one objection I hear on the mask is you’re infringing on someone’s personal freedoms. I agree with that 100 percent and that’s exactly why everyone should wear a mask.”

The proclamation is largely based on one issued by Governor Kim Reynolds several weeks ago. You can read the county’s proclamation by clicking here.
