(Undated)– Officials are warning of an extremely high fire danger in portions of northwest Iowa today (Wednesday), and they say it will likely continue into Thursday.
A red flag warning has been issued for Sioux, Plymouth, Cherokee and Buena Vista counties.
The National Weather Service says the Grassland Fire Danger Index will reach the extreme category this (Wednesday) afternoon across a good deal of northwest Iowa.
They say a combination of strong wind, dry vegetation and extremely low relative humidity are all contributing to the very high fire danger.
Authorities in Sioux county are requesting farmers there temporarily suspend harvest activities. A number of grass and field fires were reported there Tuesday. Officials say the concern is over sparks from combines potentially setting off additional fires.
