(Spencer)– An annual event to increase awareness about breast cancer will be held tomorrow (Thurs.) evening in Spencer. Jeannette Hasley, Women’s Health Director at Spencer Hospital, says the walk will begin at Spencer Hospital’s Grand Avenue Park, and that there will be some changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic…
“We’re doing a come and go this year Steve from 5:00 to 7:00. Normally we gather, we have a huge gathering of a sea of pink in our park. We’re not doing that, so we ask people to come and go. So if you can come at 5:00, great; 5:15, 5:30. Whatever time between 5:00 and 7:00, just come and go, and then we’ll get you your mask, and please wear pink because we certainly have this walk and we want people to have the awareness of what we’re walking for, and so once you get your mask from us then you can just start walking and we cross and go down Grand to Leech Park and turn back around end back in the park again.”
Hasley says this marks the 15th year for the event…
“We know that breast cancer is so much more than just as walking around in pink t-shirts, right? It is the awareness of getting your mammogram, getting those scheduled. You know, recommendations about women over age 50 or 45, they’re differing but please make sure that you’re reaching out and working with your physician at getting your mammogram scheduled. We know that prevention is best, for sure, and if you have some risk factors it’s even more important to get those mammograms in, so just as a reminder, certainly, to make sure you’re getting mammograms and taking good care of yourself.”
She says the theme for this year’s event is “We’re In This Together”.
