(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors today (Tues.) voted to accept a petition calling for an improvement to Drainage District 15, which is south of Lake Park, and to appoint an engineer. A previously proposed plan to do a more major project in that same area was dropped after a majority of property owners in the district opposed it.
The supervisors also today (Tues.) talked about the possibility of tougher penalties against utility company contractors who damage tile lines. Supervisor Steve Clark said the problem is becoming more and more of an issue…
“If a tile line gets screwed up it doesn’t matter if it’s county or whether it’s private, it costs to fix it and if it goes on for a number of years then there’s crop damage over time because, you know, maybe it doesn’t let it drain right and it drowns out. You know, I’ve had a number of conversations on this and people are asking for, you know, isn’t there some kind of teeth we can put in our easements to address that even, six, eight years after the fact they’re the ones that caused the problem.”
It was the consensus of the supervisors to have the County Attorney’s Office research the matter.
COVID-19 was also a brief topic of discussion, with Supervisor Chairman Bill Leupold expressing concern over a large number of people in the Iowa Great Lakes over the holiday weekend. He said what he saw at a local retailer has him very concerned…
“There were about 20, 25 people plus a number of workers and the only one wearing a mask was my wife. It was like, what COVID-19? So I am not hopeful for the future here, folks.”
A joint meeting of the Board of Supervisors and city officials is scheduled for 5:30 pm Thursday, May 28th, to talk about the local COVID-19 situation and other matters. The meeting will be held electronically.
