Local Banks Warn Of New E-Mail Scam

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Local financial institutions are alerting their customers to a new on-line scam.

Jerry Adams is Market President at Liberty Bank in Arnolds Park. He tells KUOO news the latest scam is yet another attempt to steal your identity. Adams says this particular scam mimics Shazam, a company that processes ATM and debit card transactions. He says an e-mail prompts recipients for personal information it says is needed to update its records. Adams says if you get such an e-mail, you should delete it and contact your bank. He says Shazam does not update its records in that manner.

Adams says that as of this (Thursday) afternoon, there had been no reports of anyone locally being victimized by the scam. But he says they just were alerted of it earlier in the day by a customer who received such an e-mail.

Officials say you should question the authenticity of any notification you get requesting personal information, be it on-line, on the telephone or in the mail. If you have any doubts whatsoever, don’t fill it out and destroy the form.
