SL Motorists Express Frustration Over Mall Stoplights

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The stoplights at the intersection of Highways nine and 71 and Peoria Avenue in Spirit Lake have become a source of frustration for many motorists.

Public Works Director Todd Dolphin says they’ve been getting quite a few complaints about it at city hall. Most of the frustration is over how the lights are timed. Typically they’re controlled by traffic flow, but Dolphin says some sensors have gone bad and need to be replaced. For now the lights have been put on a timer. Dolphin says they’re supposed to be fixed with the highway project. He says he’s been unable to get a hold of the proper personnel to find out when that’s going to be done.

Work on Highways nine and 71 through Spirit Lake has been ongoing since last spring. Traffic through town is still limited to two lanes, and nearly six months after it started, the main corridor through the heart of Spirit Lake remains unlit at night.
