Apartment House Fire Results In Temporary Evacuation

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A fire early this (Saturday) afternoon has resulted in the temporary evacuation of a Spirit Lake apartment building.

The Spirit Lake Fire Department was called to 608 Lake Street around 1:00 p.m. Witnesses say a heavy amount of smoke could be seen coming from a bottom floor unit. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. Assistant Fire Chief Doug Steuven says it appears to have been the result of a burner on a stove that was left on.

Utilities to the building have been cut off until an inspection can be done to make sure it’s safe.

It also wasn’t immediately certain as to when residents would be allowed to return to the building. Steuven says they’ll probably have to spend the night elsewhere.
