DOT Hopes New Markings Will Reduce Accidents At North Y

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Updated pavement markings have been added to the intersection of Highways 71 and 18 and Clay County Road B-19 at the “north Y” in Spencer.

Roxanne Seward, a Traffic Technician with the D-O-T’s District Three Office in Sioux City, says the new markings should enhance safety at what’s been a dangerous intersection.

According to D-O-T statistics, 52 percent of all Iowa crashes that occur at rural expressway intersections involve a right-angle crash as a result of a motorist entering or crossing the expressway from a side-road. Most occur in the far side of the intersection, after the motorist has crossed the median.
