(Emmetsburg)– Besides the city council elections, Emmetsburg residents will have another issue to vote on Tuesday.
City officials are seeking to implement a seven percent hotel/motel tax in the city of Emmetsburg. Revenue would becollected from the traveling public when they coose to stay at any of Emmetsburg’s bed and breakfast inns, hotels and motels.
City Administrator John Bird says half of the proceeds from the tax would be used to improve recreational properties in Emmetsburg. Bird says the other half could be spent on any lawful purpose.
There are 10 counties and roughly 85 communities in the state that have a hotel-tax in place, including Dickinson county, Spencer, Storm Lake, Estherville and Algona.
If passed, the seven percent tax would be in place until it’s repealed.
