Spencer Man Indicted On Firearm Charge

November 22, 2014

(Sioux City)– A Spencer man has been charged in U-S District Court with one count of possessing a firearm while being a marijuana user.

The charge against 26-year-old Joey Doran stems from an alleged incident on April 27th of this year. It’s contained in an indictment filed November 16th and unsealed last week in U-S District Court.

Doran made an initial appearance in Federal Court November 22nd and was released on bond. A trial is set for January 3rd, 2006.

If convicted Doran faces a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and a 250-thousand dollar fine.

The case is being prosecuted as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods”, a cooperative local, state and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. Under federal law, a drug user may not possess a firearm or ammunition.

The case was investigated by the Spencer Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
