(Spirit Lake)– Some big changes may be in store when it comes to voting in Dickinson county, thanks to the “Help America Vote Act” or HAVA.
Dickinson County Auditor Nancy Reiman says among other things, HAVA requires polling sites be handicap accessible and meet other standards as well. Several current polling sites do NOT. Reiman told the board of supervisors Tuesday bringing those sites up to standard will be costly. Instead, she’s recommending they be merged with others that DO meet the standards.
Under her proposal, the number of precincts in the county would be decreased from 15 to 10. It would pair Diamond Lake Township with Spirit Lake Township West; Excelsior and Lakeville would be combined; the Milford, Okoboji and Westport precincts would all go together; and Richland, Superior and Spirit Lake East precincts would be merged. Reiman says she’s also considering combining the Spirit Lake North and Orleans precincts, but needs approval from the city of Spirit Lake in order for that to happen.
Reiman will formally present her recommendations at an upcoming board of supervisors meeting.
