Watershed Grant Awarded To Dickinson County Project

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A proposal to protect and enhance water quality in Dickinson and Buena Vista counties has won tentative approval under a new state program designed to improve Iowa watersheds.

At a meeting Monday, the Watershed Improvement Board made preliminary awards for 17 projects totalling more than 4.7 million dollars.

A project in Dickinson county was awarded nearly 487-thousand dollars. The Dickinson County Urban Watersheds plan will offer cost-share incentives and technical expertise to existing residential and business owners willing to establish low-impact development practices such as rain gardens, bioswales and pervious paving designed to reduce stormwater runoff into lakes and streams.

The Iowa Legislature earmarked five million dollars for the new program, which is overseen by a 15-member review board.

48 projects applied for funding through the program. 17 projects totaling 4.7 million dollars in funding were approved.
