Long Time Spirit Lake Fire Chief Steps Down

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake will have a new Fire Chief effective with the new year.

Wally Jorgenson is retiring as Spirit Lake Fire Chief after 12 years at the helm. Jorgenson has been on the department 42 years. Jorgenson says it’s been a great ride, but decided the timing was right now to step aside and let someone else take over.

Jorgenson says there’s a lot he’s going to miss, including the comraderie with firefighters and what he says is a special brotherhood that exists between them.

Jorgenson says construction of the new fire station in 1996 and the purchase of an aerial truck a couple years ago stick out as just a couple of highlights during his tenure.

Jorgenson says he’ll stay on with the department a few months as an advisor to help with the transition to a new chief. After that he plans to fish, run and spend time with his family.

Spirit Lake firefighters have voted in David Kollasch as their next chief. He’s been on the department since 1995. Kollasch thanked fellow firefighters for the honor and said he’s very excited at the opportunity. As of right now Kollasch says he has no major changes planned for the department or its operations.
