Careless Smoking Sited As Cause of Arnolds Park House Fire

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– A fire that destroyed an Arnolds Park home last weekend has been ruled accidental by investigators.

The Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Department was called to a house fire early Saturday at 377 Lake Drive. The occupant of the home, Matt Williams, was able to escape after smelling smoke.

An investigation into a possible cause was conducted by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Fire Department. They determined the fire started in a bedroom in the northwest corner of the home. The cause was improperly discarded smoking materials left on a sofa in the room.

The house is owned by Steve and Connie DeGroote. It’s considered a total loss. Damage is estimated at more than 125-thousand dollars.
