Ice Conditions On Area Lakes Remain Dangerous

November 22, 2014

(Wahpeton)– Except for the bays, ice conditions on the Iowa Great Lakes remain less than favorable.

Gary Owen of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says anyone planning to venture out still needs to use extreme caution. He says the thickness of the ice on most of the lakes continues to vary a lot over short distances. Owen adds there’s even still some open water occasionally in the middle of West Lake Okoboji.

The University of Okoboji Winter Games are now just weeks away. But Owen says it isn’t time to panic just yet.

A similar scenario existed several years ago when a mild winter resulted in poor ice conditions. That changed, though, a week or so before Winter Games when an arctic air mass settled in, greatly improving ice conditions in only a matter of days.
