(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake school board Monday evening approved a changeorder of nearly 49-thousand dollars for the Sami Center project. The additional cost is for some temporary steel that will be needed for framing. Once the permanent framing is complete, the temporary frame will be dismantled. The district plans to eventually re-use the steel in a bus barn.
The board also approved a motion allowing the architect and staff to negotiate with the contractor on the High School gym project to provide painted block, dry wall where necessary and recessed display cases in a corridor at an additional cost not to exceed 16-thousand dollars.
On another matter, the board voted three-to-two to approve the formation of the Spirit Lake Education Hall of Achievement. Board members Cliff Garvey and Scott Wicks voted against the motion while Beth Will, Ann Goerss and Julie Nodland voted in favor.
The board took the action after viewing results of a survey of staff members on the issue. Of those who responded, 39 were in favor of the Hall of Achievement while 30 were opposed.
Proponents say it would be a great way to honor those who have gone out of their way to provide a high quality education to Spirit Lake students. Opponents say it wouldn’t be fair to single out someone for that honor as quality education has to be a team effort and teachers already go above and beyond simply because it’s the nature of their profession.
