Authorities Release Name Of Man Killed In Wreck East Of Spirit Lake

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A 24-year-old Okoboji man was killed Monday in a two-vehicle accident on Highways nine and 71 east of Spirit Lake. Authorities say 24-year-old Wei Keong Yau was the driver of a 1994 Lexus that slid in front of an oncoming semi.

The 1999 Volvo semi tractor and tanker was being driven by Phil Staples of Sheldon. He was not injured but the tanker trailer sustained an estimated 10-thousand dollars in damage. Five thousand dollars in damage was estimated to the Lexus, which wound up in the ditch.

The crash took place around 4:00 p.m. Yau was westbound and Staples was eastbound.

Wei Keong Yau’s parents live outside the United States, which resulted in the delay in identifying him as the victim in the mishap. Authorities say he had just recently moved to the area.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Spirit Lake Police Department, Spirit Lake Fire Department, Spirit Lake First Responders, Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance and Dickinson County Emergency Management.
