(Spirit Lake)– The way has been cleared for construction to get underway on a four-story condominium complex in Spirit Lake. “Whispering Oaks” Condominiums will be built on the city’s east-side, where the Oaks Motel used to be located, on East Lake Okoboji.
With two members absent, Spirit Lake’s Board of Adjustment Monday evening voted two-to-one to grant a height variance, allowing developers to put up a four-story building instead of a three-story one. The complex will consist of 24 units with 24 garage stalls.
The fact the building will be standing more than 60 feet tall on the lake side has sparked opposition from neighboring property owners, who say their view of the lake will be ruined with four stories.
David Stein, Junior, a Milford attorney representing the Oaks Development Company, said views would have been ruined with a three-story building as well.
Ken Lockard, who lives in the vicinity of the proposed condo, expressed concerns over aesthetics for those driving into town, saying it’s the first thing people will see as they enter Spirit Lake from the east. Stein argued otherwise, saying the project will actually improve the view and aesthetics.
Stein added the six to seven million dollar project will have 39 percent more green space than what’s required by the city.
